Question: Ballet at 20, is it too late?
(Posted by: astrid on 2008-11-30 05:50:07)
I know it's crucial to start ballet training at a very young age, but I've just realized that I'd really like to learn it (for personal pleasure, nothing professional). By the way, I have not taken any dancing class since I was 9. Is it possible to start dancing ballet at 20? One more question. I'm only 5'3 and 90lbs, am I too short for ballet? Thank you.

I have been doing ballet and gymnastics for over 16 years and I have worked with the broadway ballet dancers numerous times. And a couple of years ago I met this girl that was about 19 and had no experience at all. She could barely reach down and touch her toes, and she asked me if I would teach her. At first I just laughed until I saw how persistent she was. So a couple weeks later I gave in and told her to meet me at the gym I usually go to and be ready for the hardest workout of her life. She came with a smile on her face and was completely confident, and I cold really tell she was trying. Although she could barely do anything, she was determined to get it down. And now two years later she is AMAZING. She looks like she's been doing it since birth. :)

It's never too late, it may be hard to get back into Ballet but if you really want to, it will show. Practice doing some stretches and plies at home to warm you up before class. Ballet has no height requirements.

If you want to do it for fun, then there's absolutely no reason for you not to give it a go. Check out Yahoo or your local newspaper for classes etc. Have fun.

Height may only matter if you want to do it professionally but since you said for personal pleasure, i doubt if your height will matter to the instructor(s). I don't think it's too late but to get a head start so you won't be TOO far behind, try pilates and yoga. They are descendants of ballet. It stretches you out and help you become more flexible and lean. Good luck and have fun!!!

Ok here this is serious i started ballet at the age of 3 i am now 12 you could easily do it because it is never too late but there will only one problem you won't be able to go on pointe and if you do it will be very hard for you another thing is i was born premature so i am tiny weak and very fragile yes i did get teased and laughed at in ballet classes and sometimes i still do but that didn't stop me (well it kind of did because i was kind of weak so it took me a longer time to go on pointe) now i am always put in front at pantomimes and i i am always best when it came to choreographing my own work so don't say it is too late and don't say you are too short the real thing that makes a real ballerina is the passion and actual love for ballet i hope i helped and please nobody post any rude comments about my answer i do have feelings anyway good luck

It is never too late to start dancing! Check out some local studios near you. Most places have adult classes. You can even try taking them with a friend to make it more fun. And you are most defiantly not too short for ballet.

Its NEVER too late. You could start at 50 if you have the physical strength for it. But, yes, a lot dance studios have beginning ballet for adults. Just look your city up and find different studios. And, no you're not too short. I'm 5'2 " and I weigh a little more than you, but I still dance, so no you're not at all too short. good luck = ]
